Leadership Volunteer

Los Angeles

Programmatic Officer

Posted:

June 18, 2026

You're role

YPFP Los Angeles is seeking motivated Leadership Volunteers to help grow and shape our chapter as we build a vibrant community for young professionals working at the intersection of foreign policy, international affairs, and global engagement in Southern California. Leadership Volunteers play an active role in chapter operations — whether that means leading programming around a specific issue area (e.g., human rights, trade, security, diplomacy, technology policy), supporting events and partnerships, contributing to communications and outreach, or taking on general chapter-building responsibilities as needed.

This is a flexible, high-ownership role: volunteers are encouraged to bring their own interests and expertise to the table and help define how they contribute, whether through spearheading a topic-focused initiative or supporting the broader operations of the chapter. Leadership Volunteers work closely with chapter directors and fellow volunteers to plan events, build partnerships with regional organizations, and create meaningful opportunities for members to engage with global issues.

What you'll do

  • Lead or co-lead programming around a specific issue area of interest (e.g., human rights, trade, security, diplomacy, technology policy, development), including identifying topics, speakers, and partners

  • Plan and help execute chapter events such as panel discussions, informal talks, and networking mixers — from concept through logistics and day-of support

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential speakers, partner organizations, and venues across the LA/Southern California region

  • Contribute to outreach and communications efforts (e.g., social media, email updates, event promotion) to grow chapter visibility and membership

  • Collaborate with chapter directors and fellow Leadership Volunteers on overall chapter strategy and direction

  • Help onboard and engage new members, ensuring a welcoming experience for those new to the chapter

  • Take ownership of ad hoc projects that support chapter growth, based on individual interests and skills

  • Attend periodic leadership/volunteer meetings to coordinate plans and share updates

How you'll do it

  • Genuine interest in international affairs, global policy, or a related issue area (human rights, trade, security, diplomacy, technology, development, etc.)

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Comfortable taking initiative and working independently on self-directed projects

  • Experience with event planning, partnership development, communications/social media, or community organizing is a plus, but not required

  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work as part of a small, growing team

  • Prior involvement with student organizations, professional associations, or volunteer leadership is helpful but not necessary

What you'll bring

  • Based in or able to regularly attend events in the Los Angeles / Southern California area

  • Early-career professional, graduate student, or recent graduate with an interest in foreign policy or international affairs (no specific degree or professional background required)

  • Able to commit approximately 5–8 hours per week to chapter activities

  • Available to attend periodic volunteer/leadership meetings (virtual or in-person)

  • Open to all backgrounds, sectors, and levels of prior foreign policy experience

Why YPFP

At YPFP, all roles are part-time and volunteer-based. Our organization is powered by a passionate, mission-driven team of young professionals who contribute their time and talents to make foreign policy more accessible, inclusive, and dynamic. Volunteers typically commit 5–10 hours per month and take on leadership roles that offer real responsibility, creative freedom, and professional growth.

While these positions are unpaid, the experience is invaluable—volunteers gain access to a global network, develop high-impact skills, and help shape the direction of one of the world’s most influential youth-led foreign policy organizations.

All branch roles are fully remote. However, it is highly valuable for volunteers to be based in or near their branch city to engage with local partnerships and attend in-person events when possible. The Global (Virtual) Branch is the exception—it welcomes candidates from anywhere in the world.

YPFP is an equal opportunity organization committed to building a diverse and inclusive community across all branches and teams. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
