You're role
The Security & Defence Deputy Director works closely with the Director to help lead the team
and its programme of activities, acting as the Director's principal counterpart in overseeing
events, team coordination, and external engagement.
What you'll do
Maintain strong relations and communication with the Director and officers of the Security & Defence team. ● Strengthen teamwork and a sense of community among Security & Defence officers. ● Together with the Director, oversee all YPFP Brussels Security & Defence events and developments, ensure procedures and standards are met. ● Be present and willing to co-lead or lead monthly team meetings. ● Contribute to the creation of team goals and strategies, and support delivery of the annual plan of activities. ● Attend monthly YPFP Brussels Board of Directors meetings. ● Liaise, alongside the Director, with external partners and stakeholders. ● Engage in grant writing and reporting (e.g., NATO Grant) together with the leadership team. ● Assist the Director with recruitment and onboarding of new officers. ● Available to step in for the Director when needed, ensuring continuity of team leadership.
How you'll do it
The Deputy Director should have a strong command of foreign policy and security & defence topics, prior experience with event organisation, and the interpersonal skills to support and help manage a team of volunteer officers. This role offers hands-on experience in team leadership, partnership management, and grant administration, alongside direct exposure to stakeholders across the security and defence sector.

Eligibility and Requirements: ● Strong command of current affairs related to security and defence. ● Experience in event planning and event management. ● Clear understanding of team coordination and support. ● Self-motivated, organised, and able to work efficiently and autonomously ● Creative and willing to take on new initiatives. ● Social, collaborative, and someone who values working as a team. ● Required to commit to twelve months or more as a staff volunteer. ● Required to respond to emails and WhatsApp messages daily. ● Excellent written and spoken English skills. ● Lives in Brussels, Belgium.
Why YPFP
At YPFP, all roles are part-time and volunteer-based. Our organization is powered by a passionate, mission-driven team of young professionals who contribute their time and talents to make foreign policy more accessible, inclusive, and dynamic. Volunteers typically commit 5–10 hours per month and take on leadership roles that offer real responsibility, creative freedom, and professional growth.
While these positions are unpaid, the experience is invaluable—volunteers gain access to a global network, develop high-impact skills, and help shape the direction of one of the world’s most influential youth-led foreign policy organizations.
All branch roles are fully remote. However, it is highly valuable for volunteers to be based in or near their branch city to engage with local partnerships and attend in-person events when possible. The Global (Virtual) Branch is the exception—it welcomes candidates from anywhere in the world.
