Bio
Shafraz Rasheed is an international relations professional with over a decade of experience in diplomacy and public service. He previously served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, where he held a range of progressively senior positions, culminating in his role as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and First Secretary at the Embassy of the Maldives in Japan. During his diplomatic career, he represented Maldivian interests abroad and contributed to strengthening bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and Japan. Shafraz began his diplomatic career in 2014 as a Desk Officer in the Asia, Middle East, and Africa Department. He later served as Senior Desk Officer and Assistant Director in the Protocol Department before being appointed First Secretary at the Embassy of the Maldives in Japan in July 2022. In December 2023, he assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, leading the Embassy until the completion of his diplomatic assignment. He holds a Master of Arts in International Relations from China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. His professional development includes the 26th Junior Diplomatic Course at the Foreign Service Academy in Islamabad, the Japanese Language Program for Diplomats offered by the Japan Foundation in Osaka, and a Diplomacy and Global Affairs course at BIDTI in Sri Lanka. Throughout his career, Shafraz contributed to several high-level diplomatic initiatives, including three rounds of the Japan–Maldives Policy Dialogue. His expertise also extends to youth and climate diplomacy. As a Youth Delegate, he contributed to the drafting of the Global Youth Statements at COP26 and COP27 and participated in COY16 (Glasgow), COY17 (Sharm El-Sheikh), and LCOY Japan (Tokyo). He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Diplomats, Politicians, and Commonwealth Engagement Working Group under the United Nations Association – Climate & Oceans and is a member of its Youth Council.

I lived in Japan for several years, speak Japanese, and still enjoy discovering hidden cafés and local traditions.
