Ana Martín Gil is the research manager of the Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East at Rice University’s Baker Institute. Her research focuses on migration, refugees, and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Mexico and Central America. She also manages the Baker Institute Migration Initiative and the Middle East Energy Roundtable. Named the 2026 Rising Expert in Migration Policy by Young Professionals in Foreign Policy, Ana has published policy-oriented articles in The Washington Post, The Conversation, the Migration Information Source, and Mexico Today. Prior to joining the Baker Institute, she worked at the Migration Policy Institute and the Consulate General of Spain in Houston. She speaks fluent Spanish, French, Italian, and Galician, and has working knowledge of Arabic. Ana holds a master’s degree in Global Affairs from Rice University, where she received the Lyn Ragsdale Award for best master’s capstone project for “The E.U. ‘Refugee Crisis’ and the U.S. ‘Migration Crisis’: A Comparative Assessment of Third-Country Cooperation, Border Management, and Reception Practices.” She earned her bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpretation from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid.
