Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) Brussels is currently looking to recruit a voluntary Security and Defence (SecDef) Officer. The successful candidate will work under the direct management of the Director of Security and Defence to plan, organise and moderate YPFP Brussels events.
We are looking for someone with a strong and demonstrable interest in foreign policy, ideally in security and defence affairs, and a desire to develop new skills as part of a team of enthusiastic, committed volunteers. Your core tasks will be working on organising security and defence events, all the way from planning to post-event reports : this includes approaching speakers, drafting programmes and moderating debates, within the scope of topics defined by the team and accordance with our partnerships. You will also have the chance, when possible, to propose and pursue events on topics of particular interest to you and bring your security and defence expertise to the table!
We are ideally looking for someone who has previous experience in event/conference management and who is interested in building and maintaining partnerships with a wide range of Brussels-based organisations in the security and defence sector.
You should be self-motivated, well-organised and able to work efficiently and autonomously as part of a small team. A good knowledge of global affairs is helpful, but you certainly don’t need to be a foreign policy expert! We value continuity, reliability, and a good team-spirit, so we would ask you to commit to the team for a minimum of six months. You would need to attend monthly team meetings in Brussels and regularly attend YPFP events, as well as responding to emails promptly and respecting agreed deadlines. A good level of written and spoken English is required.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task and to take full ownership of events are also highly important.
This is an opportunity:
- to join the growing team of YPFP Brussels
- be part of an engaged community of young professionals interested in global issues
- to develop your own ideas
- drive change
- make a contribution to a global organisation while making friends and contacts in Brussels.
Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) was established in 2004, and is headquartered in Washington, DC, with branches in Brussels, London, and New York. The Brussels branch has around 25 volunteer staff and almost 400 members. It organises around fifty events a year on a very wide range of foreign policy-themed topics: talks (by ambassadors, experts and foreign policy practitioners), panel discussions and socials. We are preparing to celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2018.
YPFP Brussels staff work in one of four teams: Programming, Security and Defence Programming, Membership, and Communications and Marketing. All staff members are non-remunerated volunteers, giving up their time alongside their own professional activity.
Please send a short motivation letter and a CV to firstname.lastname@example.org asap. Position will be opened until the position is filled.
If you are not one already, you will need to become a paying YPFP member.
