Mark Urban

Mark Urban is a journalist, author and broadcaster, who is currently Diplomatic Editor of the BBC's flagship current affairs programme Newsnight. He was previously Middle East correspondent for BBC News, a general reporter for Newsnight and Defence correspondent of The Independent newspaper.

Mr Urban's years on Newsnight have seen him report on many of the biggest foreign news stories in recent times: the Gulf War; 1991 Coup in Moscow; 1993 events in Moscow; Bosnian war; Middle East peace process; Kosovo war, and the recent US military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He is the author of several books including Big Boys' Rules: The Secret Struggle Against the IRA and UK Eyes Alpha: The Inside Story of British Intelligence.  He has also published works of military history; The Man Who Broke Napoleon's Codes and Rifles: Six Years With Wellington's Legendary Sharpshooters, and more recently General: Ten British Commanders who Shaped the World and Fusiliers: Eight Years with the Redcoats in America.

He was born in London and is a graduate of the London School of Economics.

Mr Urban also served in the Army, for nine months as a regular officer and four years in the Territorials.
