YPFP Leadership Recruiting: Public Service Program - Applications Due Friday, June 6

As YPFP continues to recruit new leaders for all areas of the organization, we would like to make you aware of opportunities to work on the YPFP Public Service Program. The YPFP Public Service Program provides YPFP members with opportunities to contribute to local, national, and international communities in need. We will be seeking:

* Curriculum Coordinator, YPFP in the Classroom
* Outreach Director, YPFP in the Classroom
* Volunteer Recruitment and Development Staff, YPFP in the Classroom
* Staff, Refugee Assistance Program
* Director, Global Partners Program
* Staff, Global Partners Program

Public service is a vital component of responsible, ethical leadership and is one of the core missions of Young Professionals in Foreign Policy. When possible, the Public Service Program seeks out service missions and goals that combine an international dimension with a desire to serve others. The 2008 Public Service Program focuses on inner city schools, refugees, and public diplomacy.

Young Professionals in Foreign Policy

1. YPFP in the Classroom (YPFP-C)

YPFP in the Classroom, YPFP's longest-running public service program, brings interactive presentations on foreign policy, current events, and modern w1orld history topics to under-served middle and high schools in Washington, DC. Specially trained YPFP members work in teams of Teacher Corps Volunteers (TCVs) to create and lead 1-2 hour lessons on a variety of foreign policy topics. To support and expand this highly successful program, YPFP-C has a small but dedicated leadership staff that recruits and trains volunteers, coordinates lesson plans, liaises with teachers and schools, and discusses best practices with education experts. Members of the YPFP-C staff are encouraged to also work as Teacher Corps Volunteers, though prior experience is not required.

YPFP-C Curriculum Coordinator

The YPFP-C Curriculum Coordinator is part of the leadership staff of YPFP in the Classroom, providing the opportunity to directly impact all lessons YPFP-C teaches. Responsibilities include:

* Maintaining and refining all lesson plans that have been created by YPFP-C Teacher Corps Volunteers;
* Providing active support to TCV's in creating new lesson plans by researching and providing feedback on content, techniques, and lesson structure;
* Refining the YPFP-C Curriculum Resources Guide
* Researching teaching techniques as well as foreign policy curriculum content for the purpose of making YPFP-C lessons as effective as possible

The Curriculum Coordinator will work in close contact with the TCV Coordinator and the TCVs. Prior experience as an educator or in lesson planning is preferred. The Curriculum Coordinator will be expected to attend all leadership staff meetings as well as devote time to working with TCVs via email, on the phone, or in person. The ability to respond quickly to TCV requests will be crucial. Holding this position does not preclude teaching lessons in a classroom as a TCV.

YPFP-C Volunteer Recruitment and Development Staff

The YPFP-C Volunteer Recruitment and Development Staff is seeking several volunteers to help with recruitment and development of the Teacher Corps Volunteers, who form the core of YPFP-C. These staff members coordinate TCVs for classroom lesson requests and develop the corps through training sessions and ongoing communications, ensuring TCVs are fully prepared and equipped for the classroom.

Responsibilities include:

* Serving as a direct point of contact for all volunteer communication;
* Being responsible for smooth communication flow and product delivery between School Partnership coordinator and volunteers;
* Matching volunteers with classroom requests and soliciting feedback after sessions are completed;
* Recruiting new volunteers (one recruitment per school semester);
* Together with the leadership staff, developing and running training sessions for new volunteers;
* Maintaining ongoing communication with volunteers to ensure they have adequate materials and support for classroom activities;
* Organizing meetings to foster a sense of community among volunteers.

YPFP-C Outreach Coordinators

The YPFP-C Outreach Coordinators are members of the leadership staff link YPFP-C and the education community and help direct YPFP-C's growth. This position is crucial in sustaining and enhancing YPFP-C's current growth. Strong communication skills and flexibility to meet with contacts are required. Outreach Coordinators will need to seamlessly integrate their independent outreach efforts with the group dynamic of the leadership staff. Outreach Coordinators will be expected to attend leadership staff meetings consistently.

Responsibilities include:

* Seeking out contacts for YPFP-C in DC public schools; DC charter schools; DC-based education non-profits; federal, state, and local government officials working on education-related issues; and educators in general
* Enhancing relationships with these contacts to learn how to best develop the strategic direction of YPFP-C's expansion efforts in coordination with other members of the leadership staff
* Managing YPFP-C's planned growth into the DC public school system

2. Refugee Assistance Program (RAP)

The Young Professionals in Foreign Policy Refugee Assistance Program is a unique project that helps newly resettled refugees from war-torn countries adapt to life in the United States. YPFP will select and train teams of volunteers who will be matched with a refugee family for six months. YPFP organizes this program through a partnership with the International Rescue Committee, one of the world's leading international relief agencies.

RAP Staff

YPFP is looking for highly-motivated, committed individuals to join the RAP project. This is an intellectually and emotionally rewarding opportunity to help survivors of oppression, war, and political violence build a new life in America. All volunteers undergo special training to give them the tools to assist their refugee clients in their transition. This includes a thorough briefing on the refugees' country of origin and the conflict there, cross-cultural communication techniques, and the fundamentals of international law and procedures on refugees and political asylum.

Volunteers activities and responsibilities include:

* Helping assigned refugee family meet basic needs such as opening a bank account, shopping for groceries, registering for English classes, navigating the Metro system, getting their children into school, and adjusting to American culture and society.
* As part of a team, meeting with refugee family at least twice per month based on their schedule and the family's needs.
* Participating in a training session (multiple date options available).
* Attending monthly RAP-wide events, including discussions with experts on refugee issues, community outings with multiple YPFP-RAP refugee teams, and social events.
* Committing to the program for at least six months.

3. Global Partners Program (GPP)

The GPP is a new project to create opportunities for YPFP members to engage in face-to-face and virtual dialogue with young professionals from all over the world. Members of the GPP team will work closely with the Department of State and partner organizations to identify groups of foreign students or young professionals who will visit the Washington, D.C. area and plan opportunities for bilateral foreign policy events with YPFP members. The inaugural GPP series in April-May featured discussions with a group of 20 emerging leaders from Turkey, who visited the United States as part of a State Department program. This exchange was very successful, and we hope to build an ongoing program based on this experience.

GPP Staff

GPP Staff should consider themselves ambassadors of the United States and YPFP, as this will be a valuable opportunity to shape our overseas counterparts' perceptions of young Americans' role in civil society. As this is a new initiative, the Staff will play key roles in shaping the future direction of this program. Strong organizational skills, creativity, and entrepreneurship are therefore essential.

GPP Staff roles and responsibilities include:

* Work with NGOs, the Department of State, and other relevant stakeholders to identify future visiting foreign delegations with whom to engage;
* Plan activities during delegates' visits, including job-shadow opportunities, small group discussions, YPFP-wide events, and social events;
* Recruit and train volunteers as needed, including overnight hosts and job shadow leaders
* Collaborate with other YPFP staff members to plan GPP events, including Discussion Group leaders and members of the Programming Staff
* Maintain records relating to GPP volunteer base, activities, and best practices and procedures;
* Support the Vice President for Public Service as necessary with regular project status updates, strategic planning, and special projects
