Western Europe Discussion Group

Western Europe Discussion Group Description

The Europe group will discuss a range of issues including the new generation of European leadership, internal European Union developments, member state politics, European business and trade movement, transatlantic relations, and EU policy as it relates to other global players. The discussion topics are not limited to these themes, however, and will be largely driven by the interests of group members.

Discussion Group Chair: Meaghan Casey

Meaghan Casey currently works for Kissinger McLarty Associates helping clients with European and Russian political and business issues. She additionally works in freelance economic consulting for NDP Consulting Group, LLC. Meaghan formerly worked for the Department of Commerce in the International Trade Administration with East Europe and Russia. She continued to serve the Department of Commerce at the U.S. Mission to the EU in Brussels where she worked with American business leaders to promote trade and U.S.-EU relations. Meaghan graduated cum laude from the George Washington University in 2005 with a double major Bachelor of Arts in history and international affairs.

In light of the "defeat" handed to the European Union by the Irish people, what are the next steps for selling "ever closer union?" Should the EU take a pause and reevaluate it's prospects, or should Brussels continue moving ahead, despite the disconnect between the electorate (in certain countries) and the elites?
