About Thought Leadership:
The Thought Leadership (TL) department is home to YPFP’s subject matter expertise and the editorial powerhouse of the organization. The department is composed of over 90 volunteer staff organized into three primary components: Charged Affairs, Discussion Groups, and the Fellowship Program.
Charged Affairs is YPFP’s in-house journal, composed of an editorial and writing team that publishes on a wide range of foreign and international policy subjects. Charged Affairs gives early and mid-career professionals a chance to hone their writing and analytical skills by participating in a rigorous editorial process and to present insightful and creative articles to the broader foreign policy community. YPFP's Discussion Groups are peer-led communities within YPFP that offer selected members an opportunity to connect with other young professionals who share a depth of experience in a particular region or subject. Each group is composed of 12-40 members with significant interest and/or experience in the area under discussion. Some groups also contain Working Groups that produce analytical written content. YPFP’s Fellowship Program is an intensive eight-month experience designed to give rising leaders in foreign policy the opportunity to accelerate their careers. Fellows specialize in a specific region (Regional Fellowships) or a specific issue area (Thematic Fellowships) and publish monthly articles in a variety of media outlets, including Business Insider, The Hill, The Diplomat, The National Interest, The Huffington Post, and others. The Vice President of TL will lead the entire department, and serves on the Senior Leadership team of YPFP. The VP is a core contributor to the design and execution of YPFP’s strategic vision as it pertains to brand, TL programs, and external relations.
This position requires approximately 10-15 hours per week, and successful candidates will be able to make at least a one-year commitment to the role.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Lead the TL department and encourage collaboration across all component programs.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a strategic vision for the department as a whole, as well as for each component program.
- Coordinate closely with the President, Chief of Staff, and Senior VPs of YPFP to align TL programs with YPFP’s overall strategic mission and vision and work with the MD of TL to execute and track progress
- Work closely with Managing Director to establish and track quantifiable benchmarks/metrics for all TL programs.
- Assist with the department’s human resources and administrative needs.
- Attend between 2-3 meetings or events per week.
- Respond promptly to a robust volume of emails.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Proven track record of leadership and management skills.
- Great communications skills up and down the chain of command.
- Strong editorial and publishing experience.
- Strong sense of initiative and follow-through, and ability to both delegate and hold staff accountable.
- People person who can motivate others, lead large group meetings, and keep track of multiple projects at one time.
- Background and interest in foreign affairs topics.
- Strategic thinker and flexible in fulfilling commitments.
Eligibility and Selection:
- Ideally an early career foreign policy professional or current graduate student in a relevant field
- Resident of the Washington DC area
- Position is unpaid and part-time
- If not already a dues-paying member, candidate must become a YPFP member upon acceptance of an offer
