Three sides of the internet
The Bold
Serchilo is a new tool that allows a user to navigate several search engines at once and quickly be taken to the final destination. The website works by allowing you to place short commands before your search to tell the engine where to look for what you want. For example, users interested in searching wikipedia will type a "w" before their search terms, and be taken directly to the wikipedia page on that topic. The simple commands don't save you much more time than going to the website itself - Serchilo really shines when it comes to more sophisticated functions. For example, someone wanting to quickly search an exchange rate need only type in "eur-usd 115," and they will get a currency conversion.
If you're not sure of what shortcuts exist, simply type in one letter and all possibilities appear. Users can even add shortcuts, giving a chance for the search engine to keep up with the internet. Serchilo is getting attention from internet majors: The website recently announced a partnership with Amazon.de where the online bookshop will pay Serchilo 5% of a purchased item found through the search engine.
Bottom line: Requires more thinking than the average search engine, but once you get the hang of it you'll never settle for average again.
The Old
Muxtape seeks to revive what was once called the 'the most widely practiced American art form,' the mix tape. Though there are other websites that have the same core function (sharing lists of music), muxtape stays true to the original purpose of making and listening to mixtapes: to find new music. The website is remarkable in its user friendliness and its simplicity. Though the songs cannot be downloaded, the website will likely be a target for action from the RIAA just like competitor site Imeem was.
Bottom line: Enjoy the best of technology and old school...while it lasts.
The Reinvented
Free and revamped for the web, Adobe is now offering an online photo editing program, Photoshop Express. The move was designed to mainstream Adobe’s market dominance when it comes to photo editing tools. The site will have fierce competition from Picnik and Fotoflexer, say technocrats. But this web-crawling social scientist hadn’t heard of either before, and is willing to guess that in light of that fact, the Adobe name will take this technology far. At a quick glance, these other sites, especially Picnik, have established partnerships with major photo sharing sites and might be difficult to unseat.
Bottom line: This has erroneously turned into an amateur tech blog. Updates on foreign affairs to follow...
