The Uncondemned: the fight for the first rape conviction in Rwanda

Please join YPFP for a Women in Foreign Policy Series event and partial documentary screening with co-directors of the soon-to-be-released documentary, "The Uncondemned".

In 1997, a group of lawyers and activists prosecuted rape as a crime against humanity. “The Uncondemned” is the story of their fight for the first conviction. When the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda began, the 1948 genocide convention had never been applied. The documentary follows the story of the first successful prosecution of rape as a war crime, a win that was made possible not only by the disparate crew of prosecutors, activists, academics and criminal investigators who came together, but also because of a handful of women who, despite the brutality they experienced and the danger of reprisals, got on the first flight of their lives to have their day in court.

Co-directed by Nick Louvel and Michele Mitchell, "The Uncondemned" will premiere in Kigali, Rwanda in June 2015.
