The Fight Against Human Trafficking

Please join YPFP NY and Leadarise-NY for a special joint event of the Women in Foreign Policy Series with Celhia de Lavarene, author of A Visa to Hell, will share her expertise and experiences as a journalist and anti-trafficking activist.

Celhia is a journalist by training and a humanitarian worker by conviction. For nearly two decades she has worked as a correspondent for Jeune Afrique and Radio France Internationale (RFI), reporting from the United Nations. In 2001 the head of the UN mission in war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina appointed Celhia to create and run the UN's first-ever operation to combat human trafficking: the Special Trafficking Operations Program. Dismayed at the lack of practical action to rescue and rehabilitate the more than one million victims of sex trafficking every year, Celhia set up a non-governmental organization: Stop Trafficking of People (STOP). STOP is intended to be to trafficking what Doctors Without Borders is to health care: the first global organization that uses the services of experts to work in the field rescuing and rehabilitating the victims of the sex slave trade.
