Basic Function
In conjunction with the Executive Director, oversees support research provided to high level policy makers by generating new conceptual frameworks/policy notes to explore key global trends and preparing in-depth briefs about these frameworks to influence international development policy. Disseminates these frameworks and policy notes to high level policymakers and general audiences via independent or co-authored publications.
Education/Experience Requirements
Masters degree in Economics or Social Science areas. Demonstrated experience in working with governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on international development assistance. Background in international financial institutions (IFIs) and/or NGOs as well as ability to brief high level policymakers. Independent publication record also desired.
Knowledge Requirements
Knowledge of international development assistance required. Experience with quantitative data analysis and statistical tools desirable. Superior writing and research skills. Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals from government/international sector. Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
75% Research Support:
• Conducts independent research and publishes both independent and co-authored pieces in various publication outlets such as academic journals, newspapers, Brookings web-eds and the like.
• Provides direct research support to Senior Fellows to generate new conceptual frameworks to analyze key global trends. Trends would include macroeconomic developments, poverty analysis, global economic re-alignments, aid monitoring. Presents these frameworks to policy-makers and general audiences.
• Manages substantive drafting and editing of briefs and speeches, which would be targeted toward high-level policymakers. Also, verifies factual entries in briefs and speeches as well as builds on work done by research assistants/interns/consultants.
• Tracks and monitors current events, policy analysis papers, public opinion polls, and legislative/government activity as they pertain to international development and economics issues.
• Provides analytical reviews and summaries of existing literature pertinent to the projects.
• Researches economic and development data sources, updates and checks existing data; uses data for analysis and presentation. This includes working with large datasets, and tailoring them as per requests from Senior Fellows.
• Facilitates communications and correspondence among a range of experts and organizations internally within Brookings as well as externally.
• Provides qualitative and grammatical input into scholarly drafts.
• Assists in ensuring the professionalism of publications.
• Attends conferences and seminars as needed.
25% Project Management:
• Supervises interns, research assistants and consultants.
• Manages speech/brief writing process.
• Assists with hiring, organization of meetings and events.
• Other Wolfensohn Center duties as assigned.
