The Middle East is one of the immediate neighbourhoods of the EU, and has strong historical links to Europe. It is no doubt one of the world’s most complex and conflict-ridden regions; plagued by wars, terrorism, political instability and poverty. The spill-over into Europe has been well documented, and much discussed; yet the core problems still remain, with its abundant energy resources giving the region a high degree of strategic visibility. What makes the settlement of the existing conflicts so difficult?
How are they all linked to each other? What measures are being taken that actually make a difference, in the long run? Do you have any critiques to the proposed way forward of the various actors in the different conflicts? If these geopolitical, strategic and military conundrums strike a chord, join us Thursday 18th of May, beer in hand, for the second SecDef Discussion Group - this is your chance to share your views!
