Project on Middle East Democracy
Research Associate Openings

The Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to examining how genuine democracies can develop in the Middle East and how the U.S. can best support that process. Through dialogue, research, and advocacy, POMED aims to strengthen the constituency for U.S. policies that peacefully support democratic reform in the Middle East.

POMED is seeking research associates to monitor, conduct research, and write on political developments in the Middle East, as well as U.S. policy toward political reform in the region. Each research associate will be responsible for one country, and will be expected to manage, edit, and update one country webpage and one country backgrounder. POMED pages and backgrounders bring together the best available open-source information and analysis on a given country, and organize the material for easy reference in a user-friendly format.

Each webpage also includes a blog written by the research associate, offering analysis as events unfold and pointing readers to new articles, papers, and documents as they are released. In addition, research associates will also be encouraged to write occasional articles and op-eds. They will also respond to research and information requests from interested parties. POMED is currently looking for research associates focusing on the following countries: Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.

These are part-time, unpaid positions. Time commitment will be around 10 hrs/wk. These positions provide researchers and professionals the opportunity to be an integral part of a young, growing organization, providing them a variety of venues for disseminating their work to the broader policy community. Successful applicants will be bright, highly-motivated individuals with strong academic backgrounds and an interest in foreign policy as it relates to the Middle East. Candidates should be committed to POMED’s mission and principles (www.pomed.org) and have strong research skills. Proficiency in Arabic (or Turkish and Farsi) is strongly preferred.

To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and a short writing sample (5 page max) on a relevant topic to shadi.hamid@pomed.org. We will begin reviewing applications immediately and make decisions on a rolling basis.
