Research Assistant/Associate – Middle East

The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonprofit public policy institute committed to finding and promoting practical, innovative solutions to security challenges, seeks a full-time research assistant/associate to support the Regional Voices: Transnational Challenges project. This project works on developing a diverse network of policy expertise comprising NGOs, think tanks, and public intellectuals from the Middle East, East Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. This multi-regional network of nongovernmental institutions and individuals seeks to gather and share non-US perspectives, priorities, and analysis of critical security issues with US policymakers.

The Research Assistant/Associate will work under the direction of the Project Director and will organize meetings, conduct research and analysis, and provide administrative support. This position will collaborate with Stimson staff and colleagues from partner institutions that work on this initiative.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Implement certain components of the research project that advances knowledge, debate and policy-making in transnational security matters and the specified regions
• Manage logistics of meetings, press conferences, seminars and other special events
• Monitor, evaluate, and report on developments in the specified regions and transnational security matters identified during the issues identification processes
• Participate in regional and general meetings and summarize meeting notes, action items, and/or decisions; assess and report applicability to project work
• Act as liaison to project committees and external audiences as assigned
• Support project web-site and listserv
• Proofread and copy-edit project publications
• Coordinate media outreach plans; draft written correspondence such as press releases, and articles for the web
• Identify methods in which the project can better utilize technical resources for outreach and information gathering
• Evaluate and report on new areas or components of research that advance the goals and objectives of the project
• Develop original research and produce written materials for papers, commentaries, reports, articles, issue briefs and other publications that disseminate research findings and advocate policy direction

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors degree in related field with two years relevant experience; Advanced degree in related field with two years relevant experience preferred
• Substantive knowledge of the Middle East; proficient written and spoken language skills in Arabic or Farsi are desirable
• Outstanding writing, analytic, and project management capabilities
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with colleagues; excellent interpersonal skills, specifically diplomacy and cultural sensitivity
• Exceptional organizational skills and capacity for managing tight timelines with grace
