Executive Director, New York

Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) is currently seeking an unpaid volunteer to serve as the Executive Director of its New York City branch.

YPFP is committed to fostering the next generation of foreign policy leaders and increasing NextGen voices in debates about global issues by providing its members with the knowledge, skills, exposure, and relationships they will need to tackle critical international challenges now and over the course of their careers.

YPFP is a dynamic, global, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with 15,000+ members around the world who work in all fields of international affairs. It was established in 2004, and is headquartered in Washington, DC, with branches in Brussels, London, and New York. YPFP is supported by around 150 volunteer staff members worldwide, for whom the leadership and management of a global NGO supplements their daytime career or graduate studies.

About the Team/Staff

The Executive Team at Young Professionals in Foreign Policy-New York (YPFP-NY) is made up of this position, the Executive Director, and a Managing Director, and is responsible for all matters related to organizational and team management:

  • Ensure smooth execution of events and other services for nearly 400 dues-paying YPFP members by managing an all-volunteer staff of 15 people in 4 teams (Programming, Membership, Development and Communications) in the New York City area

  • Collaborate on branch strategy and fundraising

  • Represent the branch to other YPFP branches and external organizational partners

  • Comply with financial and budgetary requirements

  • Keep volunteer staff and members engaged through professional development and social opportunities

The Executive Director takes the lead on strategic direction and representing the branch to headquarters, other YPFP branches, and external partners. The Managing Director takes the lead on day-to-day management of the NY branch staff and tactical and operational concerns.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Executive Director is accountable for all aspects of branch management and operations, including setting tactical and strategic objectives with the Managing Director, Team Directors, the YPFP President, YPFP headquarters in DC, the Board of Directors, and other branches by

  • developing and implementing branch vision, strategy and planning for the branch’s success that contributes to the local and global goals of YPFP;

  • representing the branch at regular YPFP-NY events that feature foreign policy and international affairs leaders and experts;

  • foster and maintain partnerships with external organizations and high-profile speakers from a variety of sectors in association with the programming and development teams to deliver co-hosted events and ensure financial and material health of the branch;

  • representing the branch at meetings with external partner organizations and high-profile speakers from a variety of sectors;

  • being the main liaison and point of contact for the branch with other branches, especially working closely with YPFP’s President at headquarters in Washington, DC

  • managing branch budget, including tracking income and expenses and working with the Managing Director and team directors to allocate budget;

  • managing legal matters as they arise in association with the managing director and headquarters in Washington, DC;

  • leading quarterly Directors and All Staff meetings;

  • conceiving, developing and implementing major branch projects and campaigns;

  • obtaining regular reports from the managing director and team directors on team progress and needs and assisting the managing director and team directors as the need arises; and

  • other responsibilities as may be necessary to deliver on YPFP’s strategic global and local objectives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree is required; advanced degree in a field related to international affairs and/or foreign policy is desireable

  • Exceptional demonstrated leadership ability and enthusiasm for enhancing partnerships with internal stakeholders and external organizations and individuals;

  • A deep appreciation of team dynamics; and the ability to inspire and influence others to excel

  • Managerial skills and experience, and proven ability to motivate and mobilize individuals and resources to achieve measurable objectives

  • Exquisite attention to detail, capacity for efficient multi-tasking and focused task orientation

  • Demonstrated planning and organization skills to effectively implement strategic plans and deliver results

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, and proven ability to persuasively deliver complex presentations to varied audiences

  • Experience managing and allocating budget in an organizational setting is desirable.

  • Must be located in the New York City area

  • Must be available for in-person meetings and events on evenings and weekends mostly taking place in Manhattan

  • Must be able to respond to YPFP emails promptly and consistently and be responsive on our staff instant messaging platform (Slack)

  • Proficiency with Gmail, basic web editing, PowerPoint, social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc), instant messaging (Slack), relevant Google Apps (shared documents, sites, forms, etc.) is desirable.

  • Experience with YPFP (either as a staff member or a regular member) is required.

  • Demonstrated interest or experience in international affairs/foreign policy is a must.

  • Experience working on a remote/distributed team and meeting deadlines on a self-directed and somewhat unstructured schedule is desirable

This position requires a time commitment of approximately 10 hours per week, and successful candidates will be able to make at least a one year commitment to the role. We do not have a physical office space, so the ability to work remotely is important.
