Campaign Series, Session 1: Denis McDonough, Advisor to Obama for America

Young Professionals in Foreign Policy is pleased to present you the first in a non-partisan series of events that aim to offer our members rare insight into the presidential campaign process as it unfolds. These events are not opportunities to showcase particular candidates, but to talk to the influential foreign policy advisors of Republican and Democratic campaigns about their experiences and opinions, the challenges of life on the campaign trail, the complex interactions between domestic politics and foreign policy, and the momentous choices that will face the next President.

The first installment in the series is Denis McDonough, the Foreign Policy Coordinator for Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign, who brings to the campaign years of experience in the House and Senate. The discussion will be held from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday, December 11th. To attend, please register by responding to this events@ypfp.org.

Denis McDonough

Denis McDonough is the Foreign Policy Coordinator for Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Prior to his work at Obama for America, Denis was a Senior Fellow and Senior Adviser to Distinguished Senior Fellow Tom Daschle at the Center for American Progress. Prior to joining American Progress, Denis was Legislative Director for Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado. From July 2000 to December 2004, Denis was Foreign Policy Adviser to Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle. In that role, Denis worked extensively on legislation related to the war on terrorism, the response to the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, Iraq and the greater Middle East.

Prior to his time working in the Senate Leadership, Denis was a Fellow with the Robert Bosch Foundation of Stuttgart, Germany from 1999 to 2000. During that yearlong fellowship, Denis worked with the Bundestag in Berlin and the German Chapter of Transparency International in Munich. From 1996 to 1999, Denis was a member of the Democratic Professional Staff of the House International Relations Committee, where he was focused on U.S. policy in Latin America. He earned a Masters Degree from Georgetown University (1996) and graduated summa cum laude from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN (1992).

The YPFP Campaign Series provides an important, non-partisan forum for members to learn about and discuss the foreign policies of both Republican and Democratic candidates and to further our members' understanding of how the presidential elections affect U.S. foreign policy. Equal time will be given to both parties. YPFP is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that does not endorse any candidates, political parties, or policies, nor can we permit our events be used for such purposes. Neither members nor guests may campaign during YPFP events; solicitations for votes or contributions will not be tolerated.
