The Brookings Institution is a private organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. Established in 1916, Brookings analyzes current and emerging issues and produces new ideas for that matter - for the nation and for the world. The Brookings Institution seeks to fill a Research Assistant position.

Basic Function:  Provide research assistance and administrative support for Fellow in the 21st Century Defense Initiative (21CDI).  Research topics for 21CDI include new actors and new technologies in warfare, changing demands on the US security system, and regional contingencies; specific research topics for the Fellow include illicit economies, counternarcotics policies, insurgency, civil war, and terrorism.  Research work will span Mexico, Brazil, the Andean region, Afghanistan-Pakistan, Burma, and Somalia.   Administrative support involves a range of tasks to support 21CDI and the Fellow. 

This position is PART-TIME (20 hours/week) and without benefits.

Special Education/ Experience Requirements: B.A. or Master's degree (preferred) in political science, international relations or related social science; minimum one year work experience required, with emphasis on U.S. foreign policy, defense policy, and security issues.  Experience at project management/organizing events desired.  Must be currently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.   

Special Knowledge/ Skills Requirements: Familiarity with illicit economies, counternarcotics policies, insurgency, civil war, and terrorism in any of research areas including  Mexico, Brazil, the Andean region, Afghanistan-Pakistan, Burma, and Somalia.  Understanding of U.S. foreign policy required, with demonstrated enthusiasm for subject matter.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team, excellent organizational skills, with strong detail orientation.  Familiarity with standard office software required.  Excellent English fluency and Spanish language proficiency (written and spoken) required.
