At the Wales Summit, NATO proclaimed a host of new initiatives, including the much-touted Spearhead force. At the same meeting, leaders committed to halting the decline in defence spending. However, no firm Alliance commitments were made to increase defence spending in light of threats as far afield as Ukraine or Syria.
YPFP, hosted by the Institute for European Studies, will tackle such questions as: Why does commitment to burden sharing differ on either side of the Atlantic? Does it matter more how you spend your funds rather than how much you spend? Why are some European allies reluctant to increase defence spending?
