Job DescriptionThe Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s leading national daily newspaper with a circulation of over 8 million, seeks a full-time assistant for its Washington, D.C.-based diplomatic correspondent. This position will pay a salary of $34,000-$36,000.

Job Closing Date:  March 19, 2013Job RequirementsApplicants must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferable) and be a skilled communicator. Background in the U.S. foreign policy creation and implementation process is highly desirable.  Interest in East Asia and knowledge of regional political and security issues is preferred.  Regional language skill is helpful but not required.

Job DutiesDuties include assisting our Washington-based diplomatic correspondent with articles by conducting thorough background research, attending pressbriefings, gathering news and views, arranging interviews, and closelyfollowing developments in the area of foreign affairs.  Attending the StateDepartment daily press briefings is a central responsibility of the position. Some administrative support, such as transcribing interviews and other assignments as needed, is also required.Some domestic travel will be required. This is a reporting position with no article-writing or byline opportunities.
