The Save Darfur Coalition, www.SaveDarfur.org, a Washington D.C. based advocacy organization dedicated to ending the genocide in Darfur and enacting long term solutions to end genocide and mass atrocities is seeking a Senior Policy Analyst.
Founded in 2004, the Save Darfur Coalition – an alliance of more than 190 faith-based, advocacy and human rights organizations – raises public awareness about the ongoing crisis in Darfur and mobilizes a unified response to promote peace throughout the Darfur region and all of Sudan. The coalition's member organizations represent 130 million people of all ages, races, religions and political affiliations united together to help the people of Sudan.
Position Summary:
The Senior Policy Analyst will play an integral role in managing the organization’s policy development and articulation related to human rights, conflict in Sudan, and prevention of mass atrocities and/or genocide. In addition, the Senior Policy Analyst will conduct outreach and advocacy to organizations internationally, including Sudanese civil society, with the Senior Director. Audiences for analysis and writing include U.S. and foreign governments, international institutions, various Sudanese communities, and the general public. Advocacy through diplomatic and civil society engagement overseas and lobbying with embassies and UN permanent missions will focus primarily on countries and international institutions in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-- Represent and advocate on behalf of the policy and messaging points adopted by the coalition in in-country lobbying meetings with foreign governments and civil society, as well as diplomatic meetings with embassies in Washington and permanent missions to the UN in New York.
-- Contribute to the coalition’s overall policy formation by tracking closely events in Sudan and maintaining relations with individuals and institutions within Sudan and the greater policy community.
-- Contribute to the articulation of the coalition’s policy through writing and editing analytical reports, briefing memos, opinion-pieces, academic publications, blogs, press releases, and other internal and external material.
-- Lead outreach and support to foreign non-governmental organizations (including Sudanese civil society) and work closely with these organizations to ensure effective advocacy programs are designed and implemented specific to regional and political goals.
-- Assist in developing and implementing African, European, and Middle Eastern policy priorities.
-- Lead in developing and implementing advocacy and lobbying programs around strategically important institutional and sub-regional conferences and summits in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, including African Union summits, African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights sessions, Arab League summits, UN Human Rights Council sessions, and UN General Assembly sessions.
-- Along with other members of the SDC staff, represent the coalition in local and international media, in press conferences, and in panel discussions, roundtables, and forums addressing Sudan internationally.
-- Conduct team management and other duties assigned by the Senior Director.
Requirements:
-- Master’s degree required, preferably in International Relations, Foreign Affairs, African Studies, or another relevant focus;
-- Three to five years experience with advocacy, research, human rights or humanitarian organizations engaged with Sudan, human rights and/or conflict resolution issues;
-- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Web;
-- Developed acquaintance with the Sudan advocacy community;
-- Well developed knowledge and understanding of Sudanese history, politics, and the Darfur situation as well as of the relevant geopolitical and regional actors involved;
-- Well developed knowledge of international institutions and their mechanisms as well as knowledge of member states’ past/potential action on Sudan;
-- Ability/willingness to travel throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East; ability to work cross culturally with international partners;
-- Ability/willingness to represent organization in media interviews, press conferences, and during public meetings discussing Sudan;
-- Strong communication, research, and writing skills; ability to work individually and as a team member and,
-- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic a plus.
