Regional Editor (Americas & South Asia)

Foreign Policy Digest
Date:
Saturday, February 20, 2010

Application Deadline: March 5, 2010

Foreign Policy Digest is currently seeking two new regional editors for its Americas Section and for its new South Asia Section. These new regional editors will play an important role in shaping their respective sections, as well as in contributing to the continued growth and development of the Digest.

What is Foreign Policy Digest?

Foreign Policy Digest (FPD) is an online international affairs journal with a platform designed specifically for the digital media generation. The purpose of the Digest is to provide greater access to international issues and analysis.

Now is an exciting time to join the all-volunteer team at Foreign Policy Digest. In the two years since its founding, FPD continues to grow – both in its readership numbers and in its reputation for providing outstanding original foreign policy content. In recent months, it has sponsored a number of events open to the foreign policy community, and will continue to raise its profile further in the months ahead.

What Kind of Content Does Foreign Policy Digest Offer?

Every month FPD publishes a series of articles based on a theme for each of the world's five regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe/Russia, and the Middle East. The content of each global region is directed by a regional editor who, among many other things, oversees each section’s monthly featured article. Each featured article highlights a significant news event and features a clear explanationof the issue involved, the appropriate level of background to provide readers with necessary context, and an analysis of how the issue is likely to impact the lives of Americans.

Starting with its March 2010 issue, FPD will be expanding to monthly coverage of six global regions as it adds a new South Asia Section.

Beyond the monthly feature articles that comprise each of our themed issues, FPD offers a broad range of original content, including video and print interviews, in-depth featured columns, guest editorials, and breaking foreign policy news updates.

What Distinguishes Foreign Policy Digest from Other Media Outlets?

Our advantage over established print outlets like Foreign Affairs or The Economist is that our content is designed specifically to be broadly accessible to Americans, distributed through all the virtual networking outlets.   Foreign Policy Digest’s content can be fed to any website, blog, email, Facebook page or even cellphone.  FPD’s video interviews are available on YouTube, as well as on our website.  We understand that today’s generation of students and young professionals gets their news and entertainment from various internet sources.  And we want to connect with this new generation where they are—online.

Foreign Policy Digest is committed to spreading awareness of international issues and increasing access to world affairs.  By reaching out to Americans in different venues, alternative mediums, and innovative forms, we hope to provide more people with the opportunity to know the world they live in.

What are the Main Responsibilities as Regional Editor?

Each regional editor will be responsible for choosing monthly contributors, editing and posting articles to ensure they meet our submission guidelines and monthly publishing schedule. In addition, regional editors have numerous opportunities to conduct video and print interviews, and to write original content for FPD and other sources on topics of their choice.

In addition to their editorial responsibilities, regional editors play a crucial role in the direction of FPD as an organization. We astrongly believe in a collaborative approach to  development. We strongly encourage feedback from our editors in all matters and strive to ensure that regional editors are able to participate in a wide range of important decisions affecting the organization as a whole. In addition, regional editors are provided with frequent opportunities to participate in FPD-sponsored events and external collaborations with individuals and organizations as they help shape foreign policy.

What are the Selection Criteria for these Positions?

Candidates for Americas Regional Editor and South Asia Regional Editor must be able demonstrate substantial knowledge of the regions for which they are applying, whether personal, professional, or academic. All candidates must have excellent writing and grammar skills. Previous editing or journalism experience is not required, but is strongly desired. Candidates with access to a broad range of contacts in different foreign policy areas are also preferred.  Motivation, flexibility, and demonstrated teamwork skills are a must.
