Multimedia Producer - External Relations


The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

Position Description 

The Ideas Lab, the internal multimedia design studio at CSIS, is looking for a creative self-starter eager to shape a creative vision that focuses on telling compelling public policy stories using motion design, data visualization, and other multimedia. Applicants must be technically-savvy and highly competent with new and developing methods of visual storytelling. A background in visual journalism is preferred, but qualified applicants should have experience with concepts of motion design and data visualization. Qualified applicants also must be able to manage multiple creative projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designs and produces projects that explain complex foreign policy issues and research for effortless viewer comprehension;
  • Creates, produces, or acquires assets for projects.  Including illustrations, video, still images, and audio; 
  • Create branding assets — lower-thirds, animations, and graphics — for use in projects;
  • Oversee creative projects from conception to completion and report on progress to senior staff members;
  • Shoot and edit basic studio videos and interviews;
  • Work with researchers to transform written work and data into compelling visual narratives;
  • Edit and produce original video and audio;
  • Use DSLR cameras and/or video camcorders to shoot footage in the field and in studio;
  • Use web-based content management system  to post multimedia online 
  • Understand basic web analytics and manage content on iTunes U, Vimeo, and YouTube;

Eligibility and Requirements 

  • B.A./B.S. in multimedia design, online media, or a related creative field; advanced degree or certification preferred
  • 1-3 years of work experience in visual journalism, design, or a related creative field;
  • Active working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, especially AfterEffects;
  • Experience with web development and design preferred;
  • Strong technical skills are emphasized;
  • Working knowledge of 3D graphics suites (Maya, Cinema4D) is a plus but not required;
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, dispositions, and staff  levels;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and operate in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff;
  • Must be able to exercise autonomy in the position, as well as serve as a team player
