Intelligence & Security Analytics Internship
BAE Systems seeks motivated individuals for its paid summer and fall internship program. The successful candidate will be a naturally inquisitive, self-starter with an interest in intelligence analysis or related national security field, preferably in one or more topics of significant interest to US policymakers and/or warfighters. The Open Source Intelligence Intern will apply area knowledge, subject matter expertise, and/or foreign language skills to review and assess publicly available information including press, social media, virtual worlds, blogs, and other specialized publications. S/he will support pilot projects being conducted in a lab environment designed to allow staff to enhance and develop analytic tradecraft and tools.
BAE Systems is looking for interns currently enrolled in a 4-year academic program (upper class undergraduate) as well as graduate students enrolled in MA and PhD programs. Depending on skills and level of experience, interns will perform a variety of duties, including:
- Conduct research on a variety of intelligence- or security-related topics
- Synthesize and communicate findings
- Apply quantitative analytic methods to big data problem sets
- Develop web harvesting, web crawling, and tailored search techniques.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance internal training programs
The Open Source Intelligence Intern will work alongside other open source analysts and be privy to internal training events, BAE Systems seminars, and potentially, external conferences. S/he will be assigned a mentor as a resource and ensure academic metrics are met. Candidates may be privy to proprietary information and can be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). - Strong open source research skills (familiarity with building queries, boolean logic, deep web searches, content aggregation tools, geocoding, operation security measures a plus) - Familiarity with social media platforms and analytics - Good communications skills, both written and verbal - Ability to work independently or on a small team - Enrollment in a 4-year accredited university with relevant coursework in political science, national security, international affairs, intelligence studies. - Ability to work full-time in Lorton, VA Applicants must be U.S. citizens eligible for a security clearance.
Familiarity with social media analysis software and tools - Experience and skills applying statistics and data analysis methods - Experience programming and using web harvesting and search tools - Related subject matter expertise - Previous government internships or military background - Foreign language proficiency - Understanding of defense and intelligence communities
