Deputy Research Director

Job Description

The Deputy Research Director is the production manager and editorial lead for all analytical products published by ISW.  As such, the Deputy Research Director receives guidance and priorities from the Research Director and manages the production schedule. The Deputy Research Director is also the principal editor of ISW publications, mentoring analysts in the preparation of written, graphical, and multimedia products for the President's approval to release. The Deputy Research Director manages derivative production from longer papers, such as shorter products tailored to policy makers, and oversees analytical quality control for post-production engagement by the analysts.  The Deputy Research Director coordinates production and dissemination activities with the ISW Communications and Development staff. The Deputy Research Director also prepares written reports to foundations to support the President and Development staff.

Job Duties

The Deputy Research Director discharges select management responsibilities within the ISW research team. Staff requirements include linking the analysts, interns, and linguists with other administrative support; integration of research team daily operations into the ISW Common Operating Picture; and research file management. The Deputy Research Director may oversee, at the direction of the Research Director, quick-turn products to meet policy needs.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will be an effective, highly-organized manager and talented analyst who demonstrates exceptional written communication skills and knows national security issues.  The candidate must have either relevant practical experience or a Master’s degree in a field related to ISW’s research agenda.  The candidate must also possess enthusiasm for ISW’s research agenda and mission.  The Deputy Research Director will report to the Research Director.
