Communications Director

The Institute for the Study of War is looking for a dynamic, personable and experienced professional to fill the position of Communications Director.

Job Duties

  • You will be responsible for developing, directing and overseeing ISW’s strategic communications program in order to promote and raise awareness of ISW’s research, research products, services and events.
  • You will be a key member of the management team, acting as an advisor to the President on all matters relating to communications, and will take an active role in shaping ISW’s strategy and outreach programs.
  • You will also work directly with the research staff to formulate products and outreach programs and accordingly must have recent experience in communications related to national security and military affairs.
  • Among other duties, you will be responsible for communications oversight, media outreach, press relations, website management, production of collateral marketing materials, and writing press releases and newsletters, and will have a hand in event coordination.  Your portfolio will also include new media. You will supervise one full time employee as well as interns who assist in executing some of these responsibilities.

Job Requirements

This position requires a creative and industrious professional who is able to work across organizational lines. 

The ideal candidate must have experience and demonstrated success in media relations and in planning and executing communications programs.

You must also have extensive, demonstrated writing abilities.  Experience working and interacting with high-level personnel is a plus.   

You will be working directly with our research staff and therefore extensive knowledge and experience in national security and military affairs is critical.

Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree with a demonstrated record of performance in communications jobs that would logically progress to this position. 

The Communications Director reports to the President and Chief Operating Officer.
