On Wednesday, Dec. 2, come meet Ambassador Lewis Lukens, Diplomat in Residence (Northwest), for an informal roundtable discussion.
Amb. Lukens, who has a distinguished career in the State Department (full bio below), will provide perspective on what it is like to serve in the U.S. civil and Foreign Service. He will offer tips and strategies on what you can do to prepare for a career in foreign policy, and provide a briefing on the opportunities available to students and professionals. Following his introduction, attendees will have the chance to ask questions.

Speaker bio: Amb. Lewis Lukens assumed his duties as Diplomat in Residence in Sept. 2014. His area includes Northern California, Alaska, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Most recently, he served as U.S. ambassador to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, managing bilateral relations with both West African nations. Prior to that posting, from 2008-11, he was Executive Director of the State Department’s Executive Secretariat. In that capacity he led a team that provided all logistical and travel support to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other senior-level State Department officials. Lewis traveled over half a million miles with Secretary Clinton, to almost one hundred countries. From 2005-08, he was Consul General in Vancouver, British Columbia, leading an interagency team that handled U.S. relations with western Canada. Lewis has also served as Executive Secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Management Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin, and Senior Director for Administration at the National Security Council. Earlier posts include Australia, Cote d’Ivoire, and China, as well as several jobs in the Department’s Executive Secretariat.
