The French military intervention in Mali, the related hostage crisis' in Algeria and Nigeria and continued violence in Somalia has re-energised the debate about the Sahel region as a breeding-ground for international terrorism. With governments focusing on a growing number of Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamist groups, EU member states are being forced to assess their security interests in the region.

Questions about international implications of the regional conflict in Mali and the appropriate reaction from the international community poses yet another challenge to EU foreign policy cooperation.

With local state capacity weak, what can the EU do to drive down the risks of terrorism at home and abroad? Can the EU deliver the training, expertise and resources needed, and which regional partners can help?

YPFP Brussels will explore this critical issue with a panel of distinguished EU officials and experts, during a debate generously hosted on the premises of Carnegie Europe on the 2nd of April.

Panellists include:
- Gilles de Kerchove, EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator
- Marc Pierini, Carnegie Europe
- Hans Hoebeke, Director of the Africa Programme, Egmont Institute
- Georg-Sebastian Holzer, Security Sector Advisor, German Development Cooperation GIZ

The event will be concluded with a networking reception.
