YPFP Brussels is happy to invite you to the next Ambassadors Series event with Council of Europe Ambassador to the EU Torbjørn Frøysnes. Ambassador Frøysnes will be sharing his thoughts with us on the role of the Council of Europe in the European and world arena as well as on the issues currently at the core of CoE agenda. He will also draw on over his experience as a norwegian diplomat to offer advice to budding foreign affairs professionals.
The Council of Europe is the oldest European intergovernmental organization, comprising 47 members from Ireland and Portugal to Russia and Turkey. The work of the Council of Europe is based on legally binding commitments, its jewel in the crown being the European Convention on Human Rights, with its control mechanism - the European Court of Human Rights. The EU commitment to join the European Convention on Human Rights as well as other CoE institutions is the proof of recognition by Brussels of the leading role of the Council of Europe as a human rights protection institution in Europe.
Ambassador Frøysnes has held his current position of the Head of Council of Europe Brussels Office since October, 2008, prior to which he was Ambassador of Norway to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. In his previous diplomatic career he was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway , Chief Negotiator for the GATS/WTO-issues and Director General of the Norwegian Tourist Board.Ambassador Frøysnes is a graduate of Institute of Political Science at the University of Oslo.
