After a Labour victory in the 2007 federal election, he became leader of the Liberal opposition. In 2009, the Australian Labour Prime Minister Kevin Rudd appointed Dr. Nelson as the Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg as well as Australia's Special Representative at the World Health Organisation and NATO.
