While discussions around a possible military intervention in the Syrian War are becoming increasingly prominent, Europe and the United States appear to have been involved in the Syrian conflict on a rather different level since 2011.A recently published report by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation reveals that between 135-590 Europeans have joined the opposition forces in Syria since the beginning of the conflict in 2011 many of them mere teenagers. Constituting 7-11% of all participating foreign fighters, a large part has joined the AQ-affiliated Al Nusra Front, amplifying concerns around the return, the enhancement of their radical potential during their time in Syria and the consequential terrorism threat upon their return to Europe.Alarmed by surges of home-grown terrorism such as the stabbings in London and the threatening rhetoric and growing following of groups such as Sharia4Belgium, Sharia4Holland or Islam4UK, the European Union is confronted with a subliminal threat from within. How real is this threat, how can it be faced on an EU-level and what role does it play in the current Syrian War and how is Europe dealing with the issue of foreign fighters?YPFP Brussels will explore this critical issue with a panel of distinguished EU officials as well as experts with first-hand, hands-on experience, during a debate in the European Parliament.
