Making less go further? Foreign policy after austerity

October 28, 2013 07:00 pm

Committee Room 6
House of Commons
SW1A 0AA London
United Kingdom

Join us for the latest instalment in our 2030 Series, sponsored by EADS. This time, our expert panel will be assessing the long term effects of austerity on foreign and security sector.

Just as budgets are shrinking, the price of projecting and sustaining influence abroad is increasing and the range of interests requiring attention is expanding. One thing is clear: the UK’s military and diplomatic services will need to undertake the most dramatic strategic repositioning in decades. But how exactly should UK foreign policy adapt to these shifts to ensure the country remains a relevant actor on the international stage in 20 years’ time? What does this mean for our approach towards justifying intervention and do we need to think about reconceptualising Britain’s role in a multipolar world?

Our panellists are:

Mark Littlewood, Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs

Robin Southwell, CEO of EADS UK

Matthew Roycroft, Chief Operating Officer of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Sir Nick Harvey MP, former Minister of State for the Armed Forces and Shadow Secretary of State for Defence
