2030 Series: The Arctic - Future Battleground?

March 12, 2014 07:30 pm

Location

King's College
Strand Campus Strand Building, Lecture Theatre S-1.06 (Basement 1)
WC2R 2LS London
United Kingdom

The Arctic has recently moved up the foreign policy agenda of many non-Arctic countries: most recently, the UK launched its first comprehensive policy towards the region. Russia and Canada have boosted their military activity in the region and even China has belatedly got into the scramble for Arctic influence. In the wake of this increased attention, the Arctic Council has taken on a more notable role as a legitimate organisation and main forum for the settlement of disputes.

Increased opportunities for resource exploitation due to climate change and advances in technology have put the Arctic in the spotlight of foreign policy and on the agenda of the 2030 generation of foreign policy leaders. We are therefore excited to invite you to this timely discussion with:

  • Alan Kessel, Canada's Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom
  • Petra Dolata, Research Director, European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EuCERS), Department of War Studies, King's College London
  • Paul Stansfield, Arctic and Antarctic Desk Officer, Foreign&Commonwealth Office

You are kindly invited to a pre-event wine reception at 6.30pm sponsored by Airbus next door at Fernandez&Wells in the East wing of Somerset House (http://www.fernandezandwells.com/shop/somerset-house/), entrance via the courtyard (left hand side coming from the Strand).

This event is open to members and non-members. Join the conversation also on Twitter under #ypfp2030.
