Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) is dedicated to fostering the next generation of foreign policy leaders by providing its members with the knowledge, skills, exposure, and relationships they will need to tackle critical global challenges over the course of their careers.

YPFP is a dynamic, global, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with a community of more than 15,000 around the globe who work in all fields of international affairs and across industry, government, and civil society. Established in 2004, and headquartered in Washington, DC, with branches in Brussels, London, and New York, YPFP is supported by approximately 150 volunteer staff members. About the Programs Department:

The Programs Department designs, leads, and oversees YPFP’s extensive member programming opportunities including Discussion Groups, Leadership Modules, the Refugee Assistance Program (RAP), JobLink Services, and exclusive member events.

About the Events Team:

YPFP is recognized for holding lectures, roundtables, workshops and intimate gatherings with renowned foreign policy leaders. The diversity of YPFP’s programming is unparalleled, and the organization held over 450 events globally in 2015. Our past speakers include the Hon. Michèle Flournoy, Adm. Michael Mullen, former governor Jon Huntsman, Amb. Susan Rice, Amb. Thomas Pickering, Bob Woodward, Joseph Stiglitz, John Hamre, Steve Coll, and Ian Bremmer.

Position Description:

The Director of Events reports to the Vice President, Programs and Managing Director, Programs and is the primary manager of the events personnel and routine programming operations.

The successful candidate will possess strong management and communication skills, experience motivating and mentoring peers, a high aptitude for complex organizational problem solving, and outstanding attention to details. Above all else, the successful candidate shall wish to contribute to YPFP’s tradition of excellence and high-quality programs offerings.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Directly oversee the day-to-day operations of the events team including:

    • Routing incoming inquiries to applicable events managers;

    • Soliciting ideas for new programs, member-engagement, and external partnerships;

    • Conducting biweekly staff meetings and following up on progress;

    • Assisting events managers with external engagement and speaker outreach as needed; and

    • Acting as the final quality assurance point for correspondence leaving the organization from the events team.

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and support all events team members.

  • Socialize and schedule YPFP’s DC calendar of events

    • Building and maintaining a department-wide calendar of events and coordinating speakers multiple months before the date of the event.

  • Collaborate with leaders of other YPFP Departments (e.g. Membership, Communications) and teams to integrate events activities, scheduling, and topics with strategic organizational goals.

  • Update the Managing Director, Programs of the progress of YPFP events to include any issues or concerns that may arise.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Based in Washington, D.C.

  • Professional experience in international affairs, communications, and/or strategic planning is preferred..

  • Excellent management skills, demonstrated leadership experience, a track record of personal initiative, and proven ability to lead a volunteer team.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and cross-organizational communications skills.

  • Availability to chair bi-weekly events team meetings.

  • Availability to attend bi-monthly YPFP All-Staff meetings occurring on the last Monday of every other month.

  • Highly responsive to email and available for meetings and events on weeknights (after 5:30/6:00pm) and weekends.

  • This position requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week and the ability to respond to email inquiries within 24 hours under normal circumstances.
