President’s Plan for Withdrawal From Iraq Is Attacked From Both Fronts

Senior lawmakers from both parties criticized President Obama’s soon-to-be announced Iraq withdrawal plan from different directions Wednesday, setting the stage for a contentious debate over one of the president’s top campaign promises.

Obama’s new withdrawal schedule, which reportedly will be unveiled this week, is expected to call for removing most major combat forces from Iraq by August 2010. The strategy would also leave up to 50,000 U.S. troops in Iraq for various non-combat missions as a residual force until the end of 2011, according to news reports.

Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Young Professional in Foreign Policy member Allison Hart, who now works as a Research Assistant for the Brookings Institution’s Philip Gordon, gave scant thought to world affairs. “My parents were well educated; we just didn’t talk about international issues or do much traveling," she said. Upon high school graduation, the trajectory for Hart’s professional career began to take shape, though rather unconventionally. Hart, who knew she would eventually attend college, opted not to go directly after high school. She wanted to take time to discover exactly what it was she wanted to study. During this time, over meals at the local Denny’s, Hart’s social network expanded to include a group of Arabs, many of whom were Palestinians.

YPFP London: Right on the Mark
