Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Young Professional in Foreign Policy member Allison Hart, who now works as a Research Assistant for the Brookings Institution’s Philip Gordon, gave scant thought to world affairs. “My parents were well educated; we just didn’t talk about international issues or do much traveling," she said. "We didn't even subscribe to a newspaper!”
Upon high school graduation, the trajectory for Hart’s professional career began to take shape, though rather unconventionally. Hart, who knew she would eventually attend college, opted not to go directly after high school. She wanted to take time to discover exactly what it was she wanted to study. During this time, over meals at the local Denny’s, Hart’s social network expanded to include a group of Arabs, many of whom were Palestinians.
