We’re organizing our first YPFP-NY led trip, which will be to Bhutan from May 26 to June 4, 2017 (TBC).
Nestled in the Himalayas between China and India, the tiny Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan (est. 750,000 population) is one of three countries with which the U.S. does not have official diplomatic relations. Since Bhutan is peaceful, it gives us the opportunity to pioneer a diplomatic exchange on behalf of the US, which could lead to many more opportunities down the line.
As one of the youngest democracies in the world, Bhutan is also noteworthy for measuring its citizens' happiness levels instead of their economic activity, or GDP. Gross National Happiness (GNH), as it's called, implies that sustainable development should take a holistic approach and give equal importance to non-economic aspects of wellbeing.
Our members will have the chance to meet and forge relationships with leaders, thinkers, students, NGOs etc, over a few days in the capital city, Thimphu, discussing a range of topics from Gross National Happiness to entrepreneurship, as well as experience the country's highlights, such as trekking to the Tiger's Nest Monastery and whitewater rafting in Punakha. We plan to overlap with the first business solutions and social impact summit (May 28 - June 3), a coordinated initiative between MyBhutan, Bhutan Philanthropic Ventures, and beVOYAGEUR, an experiential travel summit that facilitates private-public partnerships.
YPFP-NY's own Programming Director, Erin Levi, is writing a travel guidebook to Bhutan and will be leading the trip alongside a local guide.
Base cost will be between $2600-2800 pp, including lodging, guide, meals and transportation in country, and the flight from Bangkok or Delhi to Paro but excluding international airfare to Delhi or Bangkok (an additional $800-1000+ RT) and optional activities like white-water rafting or biking.

A minimum of 5 participants is required for this trip. Ideal size is 10 to 15 people.
