The Iraqi economy must overcome painful legacies of a state-run economic system and violent conflict. Critical challenges remain in the areas of government responsiveness, natural resource management, investment, employment and agriculture.

In the face of security and political successes, how has the economy fared? What is being done on the national, provincial, and local levels? How are the United States and its allies moving beyond "bricks and mortar" reconstruction projects to supporting Iraqi-controlled economic development and private sector growth? Ambassador Charles Ries, who oversees these efforts at the United States Embassy in Baghdad, will provide an update from the field.

Speakers

  • Ambassador Charles Ries
United States Minister for Economic Affairs and Coordinator for Economic Transition in Iraq
  • Daniel Serwer, Moderator
Vice President, Post-Conflict Peace and Stability Operations, U.S. Institute of Peace
