UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is the British Government’s international trade promotion and economic development agency, which works closely with UKTI London and the Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales to drive foreign investment into the UK, and to support British companies interested in doing business in the US (www.ukti.gov.uk).

Reporting to the Head of Trade and Investment, the position presents a unique opportunity to join a dynamic team comprised of 20 trade and investment professionals focused on knowledge-based sectors including: financial services, life sciences, clean tech, advanced engineering, digital/creative media, ICT, Homeland Security and UN procurement.

The target salary for this position is $72,400 annualized. Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment. Individuals who are Green Card holders, UK/US dual citizens, and non US taxpaying citizens will be paid a net salary based on a simulated US tax status.
Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local US employment law.
The Trade & Investment Officer will be responsible for developing strong relationships with C-level executives in companies in the ICT and the Creative & Digital Media sectors across the New York consular region (the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania) that are either currently invested in the UK or that are poised for international expansion. The Officer will also spend a percentage of time aiding technology focused UK exporters, with market entry support into the New York consular region.
Forge strong relationships with business leaders, trade associations and interlocutors. Provide a comprehensive account management service to key US prospects in the aforementioned sectors looking to set up in the UK; and support US companies already active in the UK market to grow their footprint. Successfully build and manage a pipeline of knowledge-driven projects, to include R&D collaborative ventures between US companies and UK universities.
Develop and implement high impact, targeted marketing programs and events in conjunction with stakeholder partners (including high level dinners, seminars etc.) to build UKTI brand awareness; promote key messaging relating to the sector, the UK economy and its competitiveness; and generate leads.
Mentor and assist high growth/ innovative UK SMEs and new-to-export companies to develop US market entry strategies and /or grow US market share. Bespoke support to include the writing of market research reports, event management, compilation of visit programs and the facilitation of multi-company initiatives e.g. outbound trade missions.
Identify and disseminate information on in-market business opportunities to UK companies through proactive engagement with procurement, supply chain and technology licensing professionals. Provide strategic advice to UK companies looking to bid for those contracts.
Monitor market trends and contribute to US-wide, sector-focused strategic planning.
Work with multiple internal and external stakeholders to deliver high level /VIP visit programs, and manage cross-Consulate activities that capitalise on the synergies that exist between the US and UK and help advance key UK “campaigns” (e.g. GREAT Campaign).
Represent UKTI and the British Consulate at external functions, including the occasional speaking engagement.
- Line manage one Business Development Associate.
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of enterprise software, cyber security, cloud computing, e-finance; and e-government sectors. On the Creative & Digital Media side, the candidate should have knowledge of consumer facing internet companies such as social media, advertising technology, mobile apps, e-commerce, entertainment technologies, streaming content, and video games.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
At least five years’ relevant work experience, preferably in an international business or solution sales environment.
Knowledge of the ICT and Creative & Media sectors.
A solid understanding of both the US and UK business environments, including incorporation, tax, employment and R&D propositions
Clear motivation and personal commitment to meeting challenging targets with a demonstrable track record of achievement.
Strong client account management & project management experience.
Excellent research, analysis and report writing skills, particularly the ability to produce high quality outputs
Strong interpersonal & networking skills, with the ability to work in a closely-knit team towards shared goals.
Strong written and oral communication (including presentation) skills
Proven line management experience.
Computer literacy in standard Microsoft applications; experience of utilising new media platforms for business development and campaign marketing purposes.
- Driving license and ability to undertake air travel including overnight stays both in the US and the UK.
