AMAR U.S. was founded in 2010 as the American affiliate of the AMAR International Charitable Foundation, a British charity providing health and educational services in the Middle East and South Asia since 1991. Today AMAR is providing health care, education, human rights, women's empowerment and vocational training to over 500,000 people in the most disadvantaged areas of Iraq and Lebanon. AMAR U.S. currently has major ongoing health, education, human rights and women's empowerment projects in Iraq, including an Emergency Refugee Responseto assist refugees and IDPs who have been displaced and fled violence in Iraq and Syria, and continues to develop new programs to relieve poverty and suffering in some of the world's most troubled regions.

Job Description

The AMAR International Charitable Foundation in the United States of America (AMAR U.S.) is recruiting for a new Development and Communications Officer position at its Washington, D.C. office. This exciting opportunity is for a full-time staff member to join our small but growing team to build a sustainable fundraising program for AMAR U.S. and expand our networks and resources. The Development and Communications Officer will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

As part of a small and growing organization the Development and Communications Officer will hold direct responsibility for managing key programs and development initiatives such as fundraising, events management, corporate outreach and continuous development of a marketing and fundraising strategy. They will work to expand AMAR U.S.' corporate networks and presence in the NGO community.



Job Responsibilities

The Development and Communications Officer will support all aspects of AMAR U.S.' work by growing AMAR's donor base and contributing and continuously improving on AMAR U.S.'s fundraising and marketing strategy.  Responsibilities will be varied and will include:

Fundraising:

  • Continuously develop a marketing and fundraising strategy for researching, identifying and targeting prospective corporate, foundation and private donors;

  • Create proposals and applications for grants from potential donors, including in response to specific institutional requests for proposals;

  • Develop the annual fundraising capacity of AMAR U.S. through activities including an expanded program of fundraising events and the growth of AMAR Supporters Circles in key U.S. cities;

  • Manage logistics for fundraising events: organize mailings, responses, and printed materials;

  • Plan and ensure the successful execution of the annual AMAR U.S. gala including development of project plan, timeline, and budget. Secure venue, sponsors, speakers, manage ticket sales and reconcile revenue and expenses;

  • Implement donor management system, including fundraising tracking, gift entry, donor recognition, regular reporting, and data analysis.

 

Communications:

  • Liaise with existing U.S.-based donors and research and profile appropriate donor bases to cultivate new supporters;

  • Raise awareness of AMAR U.S. and the 'AMAR model' of primary healthcare in conflict zones and high stress areas through various media and public appearances;

  • Maintain and develop the AMAR U.S. website and social media channels;

  • Manage AMAR's Fundraising and Communications interns;

  • Produce communications materials that advance AMAR's development goals, including grant-writing, project reports, emails, newsletters, blog posts and social media updates;

  • Represent AMAR to current and prospective corporate partners, international institutions, U.S. government agencies, NGOs and think-tanks;

  • Attend meetings and networking events in order to raise AMAR's presence and identify potential partners and donors;

  • Prepare presentations of AMAR projects and 'the AMAR model' in a variety of formats – PowerPoint, briefing reports, web pages, etc.;

  • General administrative, office management and other ad hoc tasks;



Job Requirements

Commitment:

Fundraising Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors' degree;

  • 3-5 years' experience in development/fundraising and communications or related non-profit work (will consider applications with less experience, especially from individuals who are well networked within a community of potential donors)

  • Successful track record of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donors;

  • Previous work experience would ideally include:

- Grant Writing

- Project Management

- Fundraising

- Budgeting and financial reporting

- Events management

- Development of corporate and individual donors;

·   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking;

·   Strong writing and editing skills;

·   Comfortable with database management;

·    Proficiency with IT generally and the MS office package; website editing preferred;

Familiarity:

  • Familiarity with history, politics, culture, and current events in the Middle East, more specifically, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria;

  • Experience living in the Middle East is not necessary, but a plus.
