Organization Description

American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) is the professional partner in the United States of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Founded in 1999, American Friends of the AvH promotes networking, exchange, and creative collaboration among scientists, scholars, artists, and other professionals in the United States and Germany, consistent with the goals of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Its current core activities are to identify outstanding US scholars and professionals who might benefit from research experience in Germany, to cultivate and support the community of 5,200 “Humboldtians”—alumni of the AvH—in the United States, and to maintain contacts to the US science and science policy communities in the United States in service of its mission and goals. American Friends is currently implementing a strategic plan, which calls for the development of new programs to engage alumni and to raise the profile of the organization and its German partner as resources on the globalization of the research and the reshaping of the US research landscape.

Job Description

American Friends seeks an enthusiastic intern to assist the office staff in promotions, fundraising, and program development.

This is a paid, part-time internship for 10 hours/week at $11.50 per hour. The internship begins in January 2017 and ends May 2017 (exact start and end dates flexible). American Friends is an equal opportunity employer.

Job Responsibilities

The intern will closely support the American Friends staff in keeping the database up-to-date, developing the American Friends online presence (website, social media, and blog platform), and conducting background research to support the development and planning of programs and activities related to global science, science policy, and transatlantic relations. Duties will also include general administrative tasks and other ad hoc projects.

Job Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience with data entry and database management tools
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Ability to work independently and function in a small team environment
  • Familiarity with social media and online research
  • Fluent in German
  • Graphic design (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Experience with WordPress, web design, and/or HTML
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience and interest in nonprofit organizations
  • Interest in transatlantic relations and science policy
